About/Contact

Welcome
Hither & Thither is a lifestyle and travel blog written by Ashley Muir Bruhn. Since its inception, the site has grown to feature design, food, family, style, New York and California and everything in between. Hither & Thither is about having an adventure, wherever you are.

Ashley and her husband, Aron, met as undergraduates at UC Davis, and pursued their graduate and professional studies together in Los Angeles; five years later, weeks after their wedding, they moved across the country to Manhattan, where Aron recently completed his Urologic Surgery residency at NYU and Ashley was a book editor at a publishing house. In July of 2011, they welcomed their baby boy Hudson into their 500-square-foot studio. Ashley chronicled much of her pregnancy on her site, Baby Mine, and has since added parenthood and family to the scope of Hither & Thither.

In September 2012, they flew around the world (stopping in Bali to spend a month) and relocated to Northern California, to the small University town of Davis. Aron is a Urologist and Ashley is a freelance writer, blogger, and stay-at-home parent. The two are embarking on the exciting yet daunting task of furnishing their (much larger) new home.

We began writing in an effort to remember our newlywed years in New York City (a place that felt completely foreign when we first arrived) and to stay in touch with friends and family; but we have gotten so much more out of the site than we had ever imagined.

Thank you for stopping by!

We would love to hear from you

Hi Ashley!
Your Mom told me about your blog and I looked at it tonight. It is fantastic. I feel like I am right there with you!
Hudson is beautiful. It will be great to meet him in person when you visit!
The pictures you take are so clear. What kind of a camera are you using? The color is so lifelike.
Well now I will keep reading ! I grew up in Rhode Island and went to college in Boston and spent a lot of time in NYC.
This is a great way to visit.
Love to you all,
Deb

Hey Ashley & Aron,
It’s been a while since I made my blog rounds, and it was fantastic to see what you’ve done with the place!!! I love the re-design, content and general excitement. Good luck with your travel plans for August, and I can’t wait to hear how it goes. We’re thinking about Japan for this year. It’s been top on our list for a while.

A much-belated thank you, Jamie! It was so nice to see you again at the brunch. Will be on the look-out for photos of Japan…

Dear Ashely,
Your blog covers so many wonderful finds and reviews. I work as the project manager at Despaña Fine Foods & Tapas Cafe and Despaña Vinos y Mas. Our stores feature food, products and wine from Spain and our mantra is to bring authentic Spain to NYC. So many customers search us out after they have traveled to Spain and upon their return to the NY are seeking the relive their experience. We are planning a very special and unique event in which enthusiasts of Spanish ham can learn how to carve their own leg of ham from master carvers. I was wondering if you ever feature editorials or announce special events such as this. If so, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss our event with you.
Thank you

Hello! I’m the children’s librarian at the Mulberry Street Library… One of my co-workers recognized you from your blog this morning (!!!) and pointed me to it. What a beautiful site you have. :) Hudson is such a cutie–I’ll be keeping an eye out for his little car here in the Children’s Room. Also, I just ordered a Sakura Bloom sling for our own baby #2 after reading your list of baby essentials! Hoping to see you and Hudson again soon, -Susie

Thanks, Susie! How funny! I look forward to story time every week, now and cross my fingers that Hudson’s nap schedule keeps allowing us to make it in time. See you soon!

Hi. I have just discovered your site. We have been married a month longer than you and seem to share the same love of travel, but we live near London in the UK! I love your writing style and photography. I’m getting more into photojournalism, and currently enjoy portrait and nature photography. I have photographed several weddings and one baby portrait series but need to step up my equipment as only have an slr bridge camera. I’m getting a digital SLR this summer. Do you have any recommendations? Thinking of a Cannon. Also any photography tips, techniques or must-haves?
I appreciate your time to reply.
Many thanks
Anya

Thank you so much, Anya–belatedly! I really appreciate that. We have a Cannon Rebel T2i and a 24-105mm lens. I use that and my iPhone primarily. I wish I had a great, quick answer in regards to tips. I’m sure–with your experience–that you know the main one I’d pass on: look for the light! I can’t recall the last time either of us used a flash. Natural light is hard to beat. Otherwise, I can say that practice has made a world of difference. We both agree that we’ve improved so much from blogging! It has been a wonderful exercise to help us with photos. Thanks again!

I am so happy I found you! It is so nice to explore the blog of someone whose spouse is also in medical training! We, actually, almost ended up in NYC for his fellowship. Thankfully, he got into the program here in SF. I don’t like the cold. I’m really mean when I’m cold. I look forward to following your blog!

Ha ha! The cold does bring out the Scrooge, no? Thank you so much, Nina!

Good evening. I need to buy about 150 bags of the chips for an event in September. Is there a wholesale resource? A retail source.

Many thanks,

Dear Ashley and Aron,
I discovered your blog by accident and after some first photos I couldn’t stop exploring them. I love the point you look at the world and the way you show it to us by the pictures. In your eyes you’ve got so much warmth, honesty and just pure feeling of happiness. I wish you best and keep on writting your blog. Surely your son one day will be very grateful for so nice diary.

Hi there! I seem to recall you mentioning that you read “Good Night Moon” to Hudson at bedtime. You may have already come across this hilarious tidbit, but in case you haven’t, check out:

Hi Ashley & Aron,
I had accidentally tripped on your blog last week and it was a ‘voila’ experience! Awesome work, Congrats. Just curious what Camera and lens do you use? Thanks.
Cheers,
Noel.

So happy you like the site. We used to use a canon t2i with the 28-105 lens for all the shots, but since Hudson was born, the iphone has become more common.

Ashley & Aron,

Congrats on amazing and very inspirational blog. It’s such a wonderful experience to document your own kid childchood years. I’m pretty sure Hudson will be very grateful one day, to be able to go back and have it all in one place!
Having a child of very similar age I really appreciate all tips for flying children.

Huge thanks for sharing!
Best of luck for future! Keep us posted!
