A true find in Old San Juan

by Ashley on March 15, 2011

When Aron and I were in San Juan a couple weeks ago, we stumbled upon the most fabulous old shop. I was immediately drawn from the Fortaleza to doorstep of OlĂ© by the sight of hand-crafted espadrille sandals (like the ones we’d brought home from Madrid), but as we wandered past the custom-fit hats (gorgeous), we found that the the store held many other treasures: Old post cards were displayed in antique, mechanical rotating racks; wooden caballero stirrups hung in one corner while old cameras and cartography tools rested in another. I wish we could have had more time to explore its depths. It’s definitely worth a stop if you ever find yourself in the city.

My husband and I have been there! On our honeymoon. I, too, spotted those lovely striped shoes. We hope to return again and again. P.S. We used your post from your Caribbean cruise (with a stopover in San Juan) as our travel guide. Thanks for that. xo.

That's so fun! I love when you find shops that just keep things for forever.

So very interesting. When I lived in Argentina everyone wears Aparagatas. They are the casual shoe of most latin cultures. They only cost something like 10 pesos in argentina and thats roughly 3 bucks. It is just a canvas shoe that I happen to love. Tom's has done a great thing by helping out children across the world which is great. And I own 3 pairs, but as the prices go up to nearly 50 bucks and more, I start to resent thema little. I might have my friends down south send me some. Thanks for sharing!
