Spreading the word

by Ashley on March 8, 2011

We wished that we could have told all our family that we were expecting in person, but we were lucky that my parents’ visit happened to coincide with the end of the first trimester, the perfect time to start sharing the news. We decided to surprise them by setting the table with napkins I’d made, spelling out Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, and Dad in fabric marker. And then we asked them to find their place. I got such a kick out of watching how long it took my father to figure out the message. My mother, she got it right away. Dad looked from Grandpa to Dad and back again before looking at us and whispering with a shocked expression: “You’re pregnant?” For the parents out there, how did you tell your families?
P.S. I’ve just launched a new site where I’ll post on baby and kid-related topics: www.babymine.net!

I did something similar. My sister and I took my mom out to lunch for Mothers Day. I bought her a card that said Happy Mothers Day "Grandma". It took her about 20 second to get it. Then she screamed…loudly….so the entire restaurant now knew that I was expecting.

My friend and her hubby found out right before Christmas, so on Christmas day they played a game with their family "Guess this sound." They played a short clip of the baby's heartbeat from the first sonogram and everyone had to guess. It took her mom a few minutes to figure out what it was, but when she did she screamed/laughed/cried for about 20 minutes. They have a video recording of the whole interaction that they uploaded on Facebook to tell everyone else. It was awesome!

So cute! We drove from Brooklyn to my Mom's apartment on the Upper East Side to tell her in person and then went to David Burke & Donatella to celebrate over dessert and she proceeded to tell everyone she saw on our way there… My 30th birthday fell around the time I was 12 weeks, so we announced it to our friends at a surprise party my husband threw for me.

I had been engaged to my (now) husband for quite a while. About three months before we (finally) got married, I got pregnant. My bridal shower was about a month before the wedding, and my mom kept saying "now she can finally give me grandchildren!" I didn't want to take away from the wedding, so we didn't tell anyone until the night of our wedding. When I told them, they both started crying and my mom said she didn't want me to have any babies – I think they were just in shock from both that and having their only child get married all in the same day.

I love your idea! So clever.

super cute! my parents would have loved something like that. however, they got the most horrible way ever : I told them that I was in a hold up the day before (but I was fine…just pretty scared) and that I found out that I was pregnant!!! well, you know, I figured that a good news would cancel the bad news…right?

I told my parents via a photobook I had prepared of our travels around Colorado. At first they thought they were looking at photos of our trips and then half way through I typed a note saying congrats you will be grandparents on april 2008. I was videotaping them (with the help of my sister)and my Dad was like which of your sisters is pregnant AGAIN?? my Mom got it right away. She told my Dad, SHE is pregnant!it was so cute to see their excitement!

We found out not too long before Christmas so each grandparent also got a baby themed picture frame as one of their gifts. Each frame contained a piece of paper that said, "Picture will be available after 8/2/2006". I thought I was being too obvious but it was fun to watch each of our parents figure it out.

I absolutely love this idea! Definitely taking some inspiration from you and your readers when the time comes! And CONGRATS! :)

My brother sent out an email to my parents and my sister and I of his first son wearing my brother's old shirt from when he was younger that said "I'm the big brother". It was so cute! It definitely took my sister quite a while to figure out that our second nephew was on the way!

Reply

Loren March 25, 2011 at 6:49 pm

like everyone else, i think this is such a fabulous idea! we found out right before christmas, so i put a picture of the sonogram in a frame and gave that to my mom as her Christmas present. she was overjoyed. for my friends, my birthday landed about at the 12 week mark, so i had all my girlfriends over and a friend who already knew took a group picture. for the first picture, she just said, 'say cheese.' for the second picture, she said, 'say Loren's pregnant' and she was able to capture the look on everyone's faces. priceless!

congrats and blessings on the miracle inside you!

That is an adorable idea.
It was Christmas when my sister was pregnant with the first grandbaby in our family so she made a handmade gift coupon book for our parents. The last coupon was for staying at her house and meeting the baby the next summer. Another sister wrapped a framed sonogram snapshot. I guess I have something to look forward to when I get to share the same news.

This gave me SUCH goosebumps! What a beautiful, creative story. We told our parents (for the first baby) by passing around an ultrasound picture on Easter Sunday. Everyone got it instantly and gasped a little before passing it to the next person. When it got to my father in law, he looked at it and put on his glasses and said, "Who is this? Wait, I KNOW this person…give me a minute." He was dead serious. It was priceless.

Congratulations!
