Villa Vals
by Ashley on July 15, 2010
New development is rarely approved outside the thermal baths in Vals, Switzerland; the local community–understandably–is concerned with keeping the baths’ views unobstructed, and with preserving the original character of the locale.
This concealed, underground mountain house is a beautiful compromise. The patio is built on the incline, allowing plenty of light to enter, but you wouldn’t notice the dwelling from most angles.

The entrance is further disguised: the “front door” is in an old Graubünder barn; an underground tunnel leads into the main space.

The architects at SeARCH bv joined with Christian Müller Architects to create what they describe as “pragmatic unobtrusive development in a sensitive location.” I describe it brilliant.

this is so cool!
What an entrance! My husband and I were just talking the other day about going to Vals for our 40th birthdays (in two years). We thought some skiing in the Swiss Alps followed by some time at the Vals Therme would be an excellent way to celebrate. I would love to see Zumthor's building and this place.
What an amazing home! That view!
