The old lady whispering hush

Ever since Aron did his dermatology rotation in medical school (coincidentally timed to my trying to look better for wedding photos), I’ve been a lot more careful with my skin. I cringe when I think back to all of those summers spent tanning (even if I do sort of miss the smell of SPF 4 Bain De Soleil Orange Gelee). My motivation is ten-fold now that I get the pleasure of comparing my skin to Hudson’s on a routine basis. Seriously, it’s the dark underbelly to those fun games we play together in front of the mirror: we kiss the baby in the mirror and wave hello to mommy and luckily it’s all so cute (he’s so cute) that I’m somewhat distracted from the cruel reality of the very up-close side-by-side view of the baby and that old lady. (Where’d she come from?!)

So I went and bought myself another hat in hopes that I will be good about wearing one this summer, and I decided to finally try the Clarisonic. Now I just have to remember to use it.

And on that note, a few fun things that were collecting in my starred file recently…

This cocktail sounds delicious! Perfect for warmer weather (bring it on).
Whenever I see January Jones, I think of the commentary on the Love Actually DVD: she plays one of the girls in the American bar scene and Hugh Grant (my favorite cad) takes a shine to the then unknown beauty while watching the playback. Oh, and P.S. I’m so excited Mad Men is back!
This could be yours for a cool 4.5 Million dollars. Pretty incredible.
I thought Manhattan was the ultimate backdrop for an outdoor movie, but I was mistaken. (Check this out.)
Yes–A Yearbook! We need to do this. I miss photo albums, don’t you?
Wouldn’t it be nice to have your bags waiting for you? (Joanna told me hers just arrived in Austin!)
So funny. And spot on! (Via Momfilter)
Jenna’s photos from her trip out to Los Angeles make me nostalgic for our old stomping grounds. I completely agree about instagram photos, by the way–they’re often my favorite these days. Are you hooked, too?
Loving Angharad’s pinboard of Short Hair photos. My hair was this length when Aron and I first met–I used to take an Anne Heche photo to the salon with me–and I often miss it (but the grow out phase was SO hard).
And our final guest post (on seeing New York by bike) is up in Pia’s Guest Quarters.

Have a great weekend! Wear sunscreen!

P.S. We have decided to try out the market and list our apartment for sale. I’ll let you know when there’s an open house (probably just after Easter) in case anyone knows someone shopping!

Let’s Discuss

  1. I spent my teenage years at the beach in Cali. My skin could be better now that I’m older. But nothing feels better than laying in the sun. (sigh) I am more careful now.

  2. i have a hard time finding summer hats that fit well. i’m always holding my hat on my head when the wind picks up, which means i usually leave the house without one. any hat shopping tips around here, my friend? :)

  3. Ashley, you’re beautiful and glowing!

Wrinkles are inevitable, right? Let’s view them as markers that we’ve lived well. :-)

  4. Oh goodness. My skin and sun… they were besties for so long. I’m trying real hard to prevent further sun damage by wearing hats and sunblock all the time. Please let us know how you like the Clarisonic. I’m so interested in that!

  5. i am addicted to my clarisonic! i’ve used it for a year now and it’s the best thing i’ve ever done for my face. you are going to love it! it also has a larger body brush which i should use more often. as far as the sunscreen smell that you love, you can get it here!!! i love this scent, takes me to the beach everytime. :)

  6. I love my clarisonic. One of the reasons I bought it was because I can get it completely wet. I keep it in the shower, so I use it almost every day.
I’ve been both good and bad over the years concerning my sun exposure. Now I don’t care how pale I am. I put on sunscreen every day. Not just my face– but my neck, chest, and hands too–and even more if I know I’m going to be outside a lot. Really, don’t forget the chest and hands–those are two places you can’t have a lift done–and when they start to show age–they really show it.
And don’t let anyone tell you you’re being vain for trying to prevent wrinkles. By staying out of the sun you protect yourself from wrinkles AND skin cancer.

  7. I want to see a pic of you with Anne Heche hair! I have the poor man’s Clarisonic — is it by Olay? — and keep it in the shower so I’ll remember to use it. I’m REALLY lazy about washing my face at night, so I make sure to give it a good deep cleansing in the morning.

Make sure you don’t use the clarisonic too often. I love mine, but when I bought it I used it everyday and it made me break out. Not cool. One quick question for you — how’s Hudson doing with the mini crib? Do you feel like he’s getting too big for it? I’m expecting a boy in September and am working with a 50 sq ft space for a baby “room” in my apartment. I think the mini will be the way to go, but I’m wondering if it’s still working for you. Thanks!

Hey! Still working fine and he’s very tall for 8 months. He does stick his arms through the slats and can touch all sides, but I think even in a bigger crib he might cuddle up to the bars. Only sad thing is when he falls asleep sitting up sometimes and then falls over he is more likely to hit the side. But again, could happen in any crib. Are you on instagram? I posted some pics of him in the crib. (@ashleymuirbruhn)

  9. Thanks for including me – I am obsessed with the idea of chopping all my hair off (uhh, hence the Pinboard!) but every time I get close to doing it I’m seized with fear that it will look terrible and/or I’ll hate the grow-out phase. Would love to see a pic of you with your Anne Heche ‘do!

I’ll have to drag some out sometime! Soo nice not ever using a hair dryer, but did make me wear ore makeup/feminine clothes to compensate…

  10. i want a clarisonic! they look so amazing. hope you like it! i’m sure your skin will be just like a baby’s in no time!

  11. I love my Clarisonic. Once you start using it, it feels so wrong to wash your face without it. I’ve never had an issue with break outs or oily skin, so super squeaky clean skin isn’t why I use it (though it is a nice side effect). I love the de-flaking effect it has on my dry skin. It is also a great all around glowifier (new word – Webster’s take note). I think you will love it. And sunscreen is the way to go. I’ve worn it every day, rain or shine, since I was 15. I’m 37 and the 25 year old kid at the coffee shop never charges me for my tea. I’m just sayin… 😉

  12. Hi Ashley – just stumbled across your blog and I love it. This post especially resonates. I have a 13 month-old daughter and looking in the mirror with her is an exercise in humility. The newborn skin! It’s amazing. I’d love to hear how you like the clarisonic – I use the inexpensive neutrogena version from the drugstore but have contemplated the big purchase. Thanks for sharing!

Good luck with your move – I’ll be checking back in, we’re getting ready to move with two toddlers (though not cross country!) so please post details.

So far the verdict is go for the cheap one. My problem is that I forget to use it! And then I revert to my old-faithful: Cetaphil. I did really like how my pores looked just after use, but I need it to be out if I’m going to remember to use it and we just don’t have the counter space right now. Maybe soon…

Will let you know about the move… Good luck to you, too!
