Paper Lanterns

I was at the greenmarket last Friday, stocking up on sun-gold tomatoes (like candy), when I spotted these beautiful little packages–they remind me of those paper lanterns that are lit with candles and floated. I’d never seen them before.

  “Husk cherries. Try one.”

They rustle and crackle and open to reveal a little golden fruit. In fact, they’re related to tomatoes.

The flavor was so strange, yet compelling. Familiar, yet completely distinct. Very sweet. Quite delicious. I couldn’t identify the flavor at first; it seemed unrelatable. It hit me just before Aron came home.

“Try this and think of pineapple upside-down cake.”

I kid not: They taste exactly like pineapple upside-down cake. Sugar-y, butter-y pineapple and vanilla.
Aren’t they beautiful?
