In My Bag: beach arsenal

If you’re lucky enough to live by the beach or by a friend with a pool—or maybe you’re really lucky and you’re about to jet off someplace tropical for spring break—it never hurts to have a swim bag packed at the ready when opportunity strikes. I like to be optimistic.

Actually, last summer, I kept just such a bag in the trunk of my car (though admittedly it was more for weekly swim lessons and spontaneous afternoons at the community pool than for jaunts to the coast). So here’s some inspiration—for summertime optimists and lucky-duck spring breakers alike.

In my bag…

Bathing suit, of course—This string bikini, by Lisa Curran, is sexy and a little cheeky (hearts instead of polka dots). The bottom is definitely a little daring, but in that good way. I love that the clasp-loops are done in gold. If you’re feeling a bit more modest, this one piece looks super flattering (and all the one-pieces have shelf bras or underwire inside).

Cover-up—Also by Lisa Curran. I’m really into lace and crochet for summer and this color will look great against (inevitably) sun-kissed skin. Also, I really like that the tank line dips in the back instead of staying high at the neck. (It’s the details!)

Sandals—I’ve been wearing my new ones and loving them, but nothing beats a classic pair of Salt Water Sandals

for when you’re actually going to get wet. And they look good on or off the beach. (By the way, Tan can be tricky to find. Try here if you like that color.)

Sunscreen—I use this one for my face, and then share something more basic (i.e. less expensive) with the kiddo for everywhere else.

SunglassesWarby Parker makes prescription sunglasses for $99. You can try on five styles at home, first (this one  is Madison).

Hat—My go-to is the Panama Hat from JCrew, but the Rancher Hat (with its wider brim) that I found at Anthropologie is going into rotation.

Towel—I just went back to Target and snagged more of these yellow and white Nate Berkus towels. They look like a modern take on the classic St. Tropez stripes.

Baggu Bag—Good for keeping wet suits separate in your larger bag, or for strolling off the sand.

Also, baby powder (not pictured)—dust sandy hands and legs off with baby powder just before getting back in the car and the sand just falls off!

Great news: Lisa Curran is offering 20% off to Hither & Thither readers with the code Hither20. And if you’re not sure about fits, you can call in and talk to customer service about your body type and they can help you choose a suit or size.

Have a great weekend!
