Holiday Party Basics (Maternity Edition)

collage_edited-3

Besides Tums, sparkling mocktails, and a bright lip stain, my holiday arsenal this year has been centered on one very comfortable but slightly form-fitting knit dress. It’s simple, versatile, and I love it. (Especially since it cost me only $15.)

Getting dressed up for the holidays can be tricky. If you’re like me, and the chances to do so are rare, you want to have the fun of getting dressed up; but you probably don’t want to spend very much money on something you might not wear again—especially true when you’re pregnant. (Though I very well may keep wearing this stretchy dress well into the first post-partum month.) Here are a few well-priced basics—many from Old Navy—that I found for a classic holiday party. You could, of course, skip the plaid and glitter and add-in something like touches of neon for something less traditional if that’s your preference.

  1. A Versatile Dress: I chose this Maternity Maxi Dress (long sleeves!), but a Maternity Tank Dress would be even easier to use if you want to change up looks with tights and jackets and such. And if my legs were my favorite feature, I’d definitely be into this Marled Sweater Dress from the non-maternity section (it comes in tall, which could be handy for going over a bump).
  2. Bold Accessories: My necklace is from Zara, but this one from Anthropologie would be beautiful. Or maybe a plaid scarf, tied into a draped-V? And if you like adding more shape with a belt, this metallic one adds a little edge to the traditionally sweet bow.
  3. Comfortable shoes: These pointed D’Orsay Shoes would be flattering, and on trend. (Though something glittery with a chunky heel would be fun, too.)
  4. A clutch: To carry the Tums and the lipstain. And because a strap would pull your dress in all the wrong places. This Textured Fold-Over Clutch comes in gold or black.
