Scenes from a Sunday morning in Apple Hill, a spot filled with growers in the western Sierra Foothills of El Dorado County—a little over an hour from Davis, toward Lake Tahoe. We picked apples at Bolster’s Hilltop Ranch (#45) and waited in line for fresh cider donuts at Rainbow Orchards (#10, a favorite from last year). I can tell it’s going to be a favorite annual tradition.

If you can go midweek, all the better: The crowds grow intense late in the day on fall weekends. But maybe it just means everyone will be distracted by donuts and tri-tip sandwiches while you make a mad-dash and try to climb in crates with the apples.
