Port-tasting party

by Ashley on February 13, 2013

Also this weekend, we hosted a little port-tasting party at our house (partly inspired by a new no-kids policy at our friends’ favorite winery’s annual port event). Everyone contributed a bottle–which was promptly wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string–and took a notecard, and then did their best to choose a favorite from among seven or eight bottles.

I have to say, I’m a big fan of pseudo-scientific blind tastings of just about anything, so I of course highly recommend trying something like this. That said, you do have to be able to get over the dork-factor of handing out pens and paper to your friends after they arrive.

We plied them with pairings of favorite cheeses and dark chocolates and I’m happy to say that it was all a success.

This looks so fun—I remember your blind non-alcoholic beer tasting, too. Ryan’s not a huge fan of port, but now I’m inspired to do something like this with sherry. :)

That sounds so ridiculously fun! I’m trying to think of a way to adapt that for my almost sister-in-law’s bridal shower…. :)

You’re not going to tell us which port was the favorite?

What a fun afternoon!

Here’s a Sacramento winery that’s having a Port and Chocolate event this weekend and it’s a child friendly event:

Out of interest, which winery has introduced the no-kids rule? #goodtoknow

Next time you are in St Helena, check out Prager Port. Their port is so delicious and their tasting room is really cool. It smells amazing. My parents live in Sacramento and ever ytime they come to visit, I beg them to run over to Napa and get a bottle for us.
