We have one more day of February. A 366th day of the year. (You know, to compensate for the few extra hours it takes each year for the earth to orbit around the sun. We’re all just playing catch-up, essentially.) I hope those of you born on February 29th get to catch up on those missing birthdays with lots of extra cake and goodies today. That said, psychologically it would be nicer if some other month–like June or July–got the extra day, no? Let’s stretch the Memorial Day-Labor Day season instead.
Is anyone doing anything special to mark the occasion? I think I’d like to start a tradition. Ideas?

I have always felt bad for the people that happen to be born on leap day. I hope they all celebrate in a big way today. The idea of a leap year tradition is cute. I would be happy digging into that beautiful cake. Yum!
Well parts on MN are under snow…big storm…so those kids get to stay home today…bonus… not me tho! I would start a tradition but then I would have to remember it in 4 years and I know how that would go!
I think cake-eating should become the tradition!
that is a gorgeous cake. i agree- cake eating should be the leap day tradition. i’ll find a way to make that happen today.
the other thing i am going to TRY to do is write to all of my out of state friends. i never feel like i have time to write snail mail anymore but today is an extra day so i should be able to make time, no? it’s just a handful of notes to write. we’ll see if i can manage!
My boyfriend & I joked that we should do something we don’t like today, then say we’ll do it “yearly”. That way, we’ll only have to do it once every 4 years.
Ha ha!!
I’ve been listening to BBC Radio 4′s PM show. It’s mainly to do with current affairs but they have been encoraging listeners to ‘take a leap’ on the 29th and to do something extraordinary. They have been featuring stories all week that have have ranged from a man in his 50s who is planning to come ‘out’ to work colleagues to a recovering anorexic who will eat their first chocolate bar in 15 years. The presenter of the show is taking a ‘leap’ by presenting today’s show with another broadcaster with whom he dislikes!
Elizabeth, did the presenter’s co-host know s/he was disliked?
Yep! They were up for taking a leap too. There were some really moving stories too.
What a gorgeous cake, yum! How about every leap year you buy a plane ticket somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit?
Sounds good to me! Bali will have to count for this year, but I’ll try and remember next time!
Happy Leap Year!
I have a friend who started The Leap Year Project – http://leapyearproject.org/ – which encourages people to use this year to take a leap, sort of like what Elizabeth said above. It’s a great way to try something new!
How cool!
I celebrated with cake. That’s my leap year tradition. That and a pinata–that’s how I’ve always celebrated my birthday. I went up to NYC and had the Lemon Cake at Del Frisco’s. Every time I have it I vow to write an ode to that cake. It’s that good. I also got two pairs of shoes from Miz Mooz. Cake and shoes. I’m not sure what else I could ever want. Oh yeah, tea–and I got that too (from Harney and Sons). It was a great day (despite the rain).
I’m not sure if I’m going to take any kind of big leap this year, but next weekend I’m taking a trapeze and silks class. That might qualify.
So glad to hear you had a fantastic birthday! And I’d say trapeze counts! Wow!
