Saturday’s Harvest Fest

by Aron on October 3, 2011

On Saturday, we joined what seemed to be a great throng of young families looking for a taste of the country up in Tarrytown, at the beautiful Stone Barn estate, for the annual Harvest Fest. We had been out once before for dinner, when we first moved to New York, but we were eager to explore the property again when all the livestock were out–and we felt lucky that the rain held off just long enough for us to enjoy the day. (Unfortunately, we weren’t as lucky with my camera, which broke within the first few minutes; the iphone served as our backup.)

The festival is famous for their roast pig, and for anyone who wanted to get a better sense of where their food comes from, or to have a very immediate farm-to-table experience–there was little lacking here. Some families posed with the pig, while others worried about their kids’ reactions: “Oh, there is nothing for you to see back there.”

Ashley commented that the crowd all seemed particularly fashionable, even in mud boots or flannel.

The food was all wonderful–we tried goat milk caramels and red fife cupcakes and, of course, the famous pork sandwiches. Actually, I really liked the grains, which added an earthy, nutty flavor to the dish. Seeing the vendors (many familiar) did made us appreciate how lucky we are in New York City to have access to so many upstate farmers and amazing vendors at our own Greenmarket.

Seeing the little piglets was a real highlight. They scampered around like puppy dogs and their curly-que tails were so small. The youngest were just one week old.

For those who read baby mine, you may know that taking Hudson in a car is an unusual, and stressful experience. We decided that Ashley should drive while I sat in the backseat so that she didn’t have to be quite so close to the action (so to speak).  But I’m happy to say, after only a short period of severe crying, he conked out and slept most of the way home.

I was completely enthralled by all the food photos until I got to the picture of you and Hudson and then I just melted. He is SO sweet! And the festival looks like heaven to me… And Tarrytown always makes me think of Ichabod Crane!

I was about to buy tickets midweek last week but then saw the forecast so I decided not to, and then the rain held off all day and I was so sorry we missed it! But since I had it in my head to venture up to Tarrytown, we took the drive yesterday and spent the afternoon at Stone Barns. I think I would have been wary of saying hello too, but I'm glad to know that it would have been ok :) Maybe next time. And happy to hear the car ride was not too traumatic!

Yum, what a great trip! Their spot in the village is pretty good too-but nothing beats a little bit of country.

Also, that looks like joey campanale in the group shot-(of Dell'anima, L'Artusi and Anfora fame). Great trip!

the one time i've ever eaten part of a whole roasted pig, it was delicious…lucky you for getting to try it again! those tarts look amazing, too…so much so that i think i need to investigate+find a recipe for them! :)

also, hudson looks adorable! what a cutie. i'm a non-mum, and sometimes photos of babies on a non-baby blog is too much (like when almost all the shots are of the kid! instead of whatever else people are talking about on the blog), but you guys always make it work. (maybe because hudson is such a ham for the camera? hmm.) just enough cuteness to leave us wanting more… ;)

Rebecca–you two would love it. A non festival weekend would actually be great so that the cafe is open!

Too bad we missed you Nicole and Southern Hostess! (And SH, it would have been so great to meet you! Hopefully I wasn't doing anything embarrassing like picking my nose or nitpicking Aron. :)

Anon–the glasses are good ol' Gap. Thanks!

So funny that we may have unknowingly snapped a celeb photo. Secret paparazzi. We also spotted Keri Russel and may have knowingly snapped a photo of her… shhhhh…

And to all of you Hudson fans. Awwww… thanks. We think he's pretty fantastic, too. :) Glad you're not tired of seeing him. I have a feeling we won't be able to help ourselves.
