Brooklyn Bridge Park Cinema (and a new borough for Hudson!)

by Ashley on August 15, 2011

If you’re in town over the summer, you know that the city opens up a wealth of amazing venues to the big screen–along rivers, in parks, on rooftops. I’ve yet to crowd in for a screening at Bryant Park (and doubt that we will), but the view from beautiful (and newly renovated) Brooklyn Bridge Park makes the crowded affair fully worthy of some effort.

This summer’s season opened with Woody Allen’s Manhattan. How incredible would that have been?! Having just missed out (I looked at the schedule the very next day), we tried to go the second week and see Ghostbusters. We packed up the blanket and the cooler and then, instead, detoured into Labor & Delivery for observation upon finding my blood pressure to be elevated.

Since then, I’ve felt a bit too fragile for the long trek and Hudson seemed too young for the late-night outing. But we took a cab to and from the base of the bridge to make it easier, got our little fella snug in the sling, and took him on his first trip to another borough. Walking over the bridge with Hudson was such a thrill, and we couldn’t stop taking photos (clearly). The crowd was much more intense than that on my last visit–perhaps having to do with the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. We grabbed some Mexican food before settling in to the tune of “Moon River.” We left early–it was bedtime before long–but it was a great first foray outside of Manhattan.

Check the calendar of events for upcoming showtimes!

I was DYING to go to that! But my parents were in town and we took my dad out for his birthday instead. It's the perfect movie to see with Manhattan as the actual backdrop (well, second to Manhattan).

I second claire's question–that sling is beautiful! I love the natural color of it and the cool pop of color at the bottom! Where or where is it from?

I admire how well you guys are managing baby mode without sacrificing your own lifestyle too much. I couldn't think of a more fitting introduction for a NY baby.

Very cool! I saw "Breakfast at Tiffany's" last year outdoors. I host a "barnside movie party" at my farm each year. This year, we showed "A League of Their Own," and we'll be showing "The Royal Tennenbaums" in a few weeks. Here's a link to our latest party, if you'd like: http://thesillygoosefarm.blogspot.com/2011/07/barnside-movie-party-league-of-their.html

I was there! So sad that I didn't spot you, though I imagine it would have been near impossible to do that in the crazy crowd. Such a wonderful night.

Thanks, all! It was a fun night. I couldn't believe how crowded the bridge was, even after dark.

Claire and Mel–the sling is by Sakura Bloom (follow the linked button in the right column of the page). Ours is the linen oatmeal version but they come in all kinds of gorgeous silks, etc. We also have an ergo for when Hudson is heavier, but he loves the sling (and so do we)!

These pictures are breathtaking. The lights and the water makes me wish I was in New York. And the baby in a sling is too cute.

Ahhh, Hudson looks very cosy! Always wanted to see a movie outdoors…might have to head to Somerset House here in London to catch one before summer is out.

I haven't made it over the bridge yet this summer because I hurt my foot and it's in a boot, why didn't I think of just taking a cab to the base to make things a bit easier! Such beautiful photos, looks like a perfect night.

Hi, Abby– Thank you!
We've been really happy with the Canon Rebel series. We have the T2i and a 24-105 lens that we love, although sometimes I switch in the kit lens so that I don't look quite as intimidating to friends at restaurants (it's big). Still, I would buy less camera and more lens as it will make the biggest difference in the photos. There is a 28-135 mm lens that is really nice and more affordable than the 24-105.

We have bought refurbished and would suggest you consider a Mack extended warranty if you do, too. Also, have bought from B&H and… the other is escaping me (starts with an A…).

Good luck! Best tip: Look for good light!
