Ashley made us a wonderful picnic that we enjoyed the other night on the Hudson (our favorite summer dinner spot). Her blueberry crisp was delicious, but my favorite dish–and the one that I’ve asked her to make me again on several occasions this past week, was a salad of watermelon, feta, and basil. It is so, so good.
Last week, by the way, was the first week filled with fireflies! The shadows at dusk light up with them–it’s magic when they appear in the parks. They’re not around for long…

where did you find that perfect picnic blanket?! looks like a perfect night with some amazing homemade food.
That is one perfect picnic. Love the blanket!
That salad looks amazing! My mouth is watering.
I've been on the hunt for a picnic blanket and that may be the prettiest one I've seen! Do you mind sharing where you got it?
I love fireflies! They make the night so magical.
I second Rebecca – details on that blanket?!
Every night, I head out to sit in the veggie/cutting garden or to the hammock with a Gimlet or beer to watch the fireflies (or glowbugs, as we call them). Country living has its perks because we get those little glowbugs nearly all summer long! We are having our annual Barnside Movie party this weekend, and it will be so fun to watch the little bugs light-up against the giant screen on the barn.
great photos, how beautiful!

What a wonderful post! I love the idea of a picnic…without ants! Me and my ants have not been having a co-operative time of late! LOL And as much as I love watermelon, I've never had it with feta cheese and basil! O_0 I need to get out more…clearly!! ^_^
I love your picnic blanket! Indian tapestries are the best for outdoor meals. Good job, Ashley!

Thanks, all! I'm afraid I have news on the blanket that you might not like, though… no local source, we brought it home from India.
Joslyn–the blueberry crisp was made with a modified Epicurious recipe (my go-to source). I look at a few crumble/crisp recipes and basically just made a topping with crushed toasted pecans, butter, rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamm on and nutmeg. You could also use honey. I've generally found that if it tastes good before you bake it (like you could eat the whole bowl of topping over ice cream uncooked), it will be good baked. I sprinkled a little sugar over the blueberries, covered them in topping and 350 for 40 min. But you can find better directions, no doubt, on Epicurious. Have fun!
Mmm what kind of watermelon salad is that?
We saw the fireflies a few weeks ago in Teardrop Park! Such a fun thing to see in the city.
The watermelon salad sounds and looks delicious!
I, like everyone else, LOVE that blanket! Absolutely gorgeous!
what a perfect evening!! the watermelon salad looks delish!
Ohmigod, I just want to take a huge bite out of the ball of mozzarella! Everything looks soooo good!!
How romantic! Summer nights are the best. The picnic menu looks so delicious. I was just about to ask for the blueberry crumble recipe but saw it in your comments. Must try it! Thanks!
Thanks Ashley!!

this post with the fireflies, the good food, green grass, and summer sunset just makes me happy. thanks for sharing!
Oh my, that watermelon salad is exactly what I feel like eating… right now! Is there some sort of vinaigrette?
Beautiful pictures!
Super simple: just watermelon, feta, and basil–the better your ingredients, the better the salad! I have to say, Trader Joe's has a great feta in brine.
I am now feeling the need to plan a picnic!
