Last weekend when it was cold and snowing, I pulled out an old favorite recipe for a warming cocktail: Hot Buttered Rum.
I reserve this drink only for truly chilly days.
Melt 1 Tablespoon of butter in your drink glass
Add to it 1 Tablespoon of dark brown sugar
Bring 3/4 cup of water to a boil and pour it over the butter and sugar
Add 2 ounces of dark rum to the mix
Finish with a pinch of nutmeg (preferably freshly ground)
On a related note, Ashley and I have been enjoying this Cruzan rum. She says it’s the only way to drink a Dark & Stormy. I’m usually a whisky or gin sort of guy, but this has changed the way I think about using and enjoying rum.
If you feel inspired and try this, I’d love to hear what you think.
Anyone else have a favorite warming recipe?

Mmmm, sounds delicious!
I know my grandmother used to make what was essentially malted milk with rum around Christmastime…

Wow, really inviting! It'd be best for cold nights:)
I wish you happy prosperous new year!
happy new year! cider is always my go to. this looks worth trying though.
Sounds delicious….I need to give this a try.
Oh, that's an easy one! My favorite cold weather drink is glögg, a Swedish mulled wine. My dad makes the most amazing version and every Saturday before Christmas for the last 30 years my family has hosted a glögg party. You should definitely try it!
But hot buttered run is delicious, too.
One of my favorite drinks! If you are ever in the Santa Cruz area you must try out a hot buttered rum latte at The Buttery … to die for! Cheers!
I'm a big fan of the hot toddy, but you had me at butter. I will definitely give this little cocktail a try!
hmmmm mniam!!!
Snowstorm scheduled for this weekend means I will be making this!
a little behind, but I finally made this lovely bevy for myself on Saturday night. It was so tasty I made another one last night but used warm milk (2% to boot!), a little more decadent but absolutely heavenly.
our favorite warm up drink is Hot Bourbon Cider. We made it last winter during our week-long white out in Baltimore (http://acharmedcity.blogspot.com/2010/12/let-it-snow.html).
Just throw bourbon, apple cider, cinnamon, nutmeg and a touch of brown sugar into a pot, heat til simmering and sip. It's amazing for drops in temperature and the perfect cure for a cold
Vanessa- I love glogg!
Caroline- Thanks for the tip!
Amy, that sounds great–and I bet Ashley would love it!
Charmed- Hot Bourbon Cider sounds great!
Living in Germany now so I'd have to say glühwein. I do like hot buttered rum too (though I have never made it myself).
