Sprout Home

by Ashley on August 10, 2010

A few months ago, we decided our little apartment was in need of some green.
I happened upon Sprout Home, in Williamsburg, and came home with some lovely ferns. The maiden hair was the first to go, but I’m afraid that none survived our trip to India.

We visited again just before we left for Vermont, and picked up a pot for our basil plant; I was reminded again what a beautiful shop it is.

The space is divided between indoor and outdoor space (showcasing one of those fantasy New York backyards), and seems to–appropriately–cater to urban gardeners and, specifically, apartment dwellers with plenty of container garden inspiration and an ample supply of terrariums. They told us that they’re expanding to open a flower shop next door, which is just down from Moon River Chattel.

The succulents were particularly beautiful.

And the basil gave me hope that our little plant will thrive in its new home.

I can't keep anything green alive. Good luck with the basil. Such a cool shop!

we bought a basil at the begining of the summer: it's great for pesto, pizza and tomato/mozarella!

beautiful name for a store… and I'm succulent crazy, they're low maintenance and always so pretty. Probably a little harder to keep happy in those humid NY areas though!

What a lovely shop. I always seem to want more basil than the plant produces, but this year we have a hardy one with lots of branches.

I think your basil plant will do just fine …. at least I have never been able to kill mine. And that's something!

I read somewhere that you are supposed to have at least 1 plant per 100 square feet to keep the air in your home clean. IMHO, the easiest things to keep alive and that keep coming back every year are mint and rosemary.

Basil update: doing well so far, and tastes great with corn and sun gold tomatoes.

Glad you like the photos, Jane. Katie–it sounds like we need 4 more plants… Maybe mint and rosemary are in our future.
