Paper Lanterns

by Ashley on August 19, 2010

I was at the greenmarket last Friday, stocking up on sun-gold tomatoes (like candy), when I spotted these beautiful little packages–they remind me of those paper lanterns that are lit with candles and floated. I’d never seen them before.

  “Husk cherries. Try one.”
They rustle and crackle and open to reveal a little golden fruit. In fact, they’re related to tomatoes.

The flavor was so strange, yet compelling. Familiar, yet completely distinct. Very sweet. Quite delicious. I couldn’t identify the flavor at first; it seemed unrelatable. It hit me just before Aron came home.

“Try this and think of pineapple upside-down cake.”

I kid not: They taste exactly like pineapple upside-down cake. Sugar-y, butter-y pineapple and vanilla.
Aren’t they beautiful?

Wow those are pretty amazing looking.I don't think I've ever seen them before. The paper wrapper reminds me of tomatillos.

Good call! They're also related to Tomatillos–part of the "Nightshade" family. Isn't that a great name?

Hard to say–we finished them all within a day. Do you mean the little wrappers' color?

I've never even heard of these, let alone seen them. Going to have to ask at my local farmers market. Would love to try them. Pineapple upside down cake but gluten-free, I'm all over that.

They look beautiful and delicious! The papery skin is so dreamy. Wonder if I can find them in Michigan? I'll keep an eye open for them :)

In Oregon we call these ground cherries. I have always thought they taste like Berry Berry Kix- but in order to make that connection you would have to have eaten said cereal before. But it's true.
We make a sauce with them and serve them with duck.

Are they related to gooseberries? They have a very similar look and taste? Quite magical…

These are soo good! Here in Sweden we call them Physalis.. and I actually thing it's their real name… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physalis
They are often used as decoration on cakes and on buffés.
Love them, they're like candy!

Even here far and North in Finland, I happened to taste some of these a few years ago during a cold winter. A sun started to beam immediately.

Hello, nice to visit your place.

I love all the photos of one tiny cherry opening up, and then suddenly…a whole pile of empty wrappers :) So cute. I'll keep my eye out for them, although I doubt I'll find them here!
