I am loathe to turn on the oven in the summer–even to make dessert.
Key lime pie* allows for a minimum of oven use, so it seemed a perfect choice for dinner at our friends’ home recently. Ashley was chief-baker, while I documented her every move.

She teases me to no end about this, but my grandmother told me never to share our family’s secret recipes–so I searched online for a one I could endorse, and found this from Gourmet–but the real secret is adding extra lime zest!
{it’s best to keep the crust simple–graham crackers and butter}
{give the filling plenty of hours to set, and decide whether or not to serve with whipped cream}
It’s one of Ashley’s favorites.
*Technically–as my father would no doubt point out–this is not Key Lime Pie, but simply Lime Pie unless you use Key Limes (a specific species, named for its association with the Florida Keys). If you use fresh juice and zest, it shouldn’t matter.

That's one of my favorite pies because I connect great memories with it =)
I love Key Lime pie! And this one looks spectacular.
Did you know that in Mexico we call the green ones(limones)translates to lemons and the yellow ones are called limas (limes). My hubby always teases me that I'm calling them the wrong name!
looks so good, I wish I could find condensed milk here!
key lime pie is one of my family's summer staples. it is so refreshing yet decadent at the same time. beautiful photos! xox
grew up on Key Lime pie… the more tart the better. Throw some vanilla icecream on it for a creamier, less tart flavor… I love ZEST!
Though it was my first I can heartily attest that this was the best Key lime pie I've ever had! Thanks guys.

Yum! Citrus desserts are my favourite and this looks divine!
Key lime pie sounds soooooo good right now.
Your integrity when it comes to familial recipes is admirable…but c'mon! Please can we have the recipe? Please?
This looks so good! I love making citrus pies. I will admit to adding brown sugar and ground pecans to my pie crust though. It complicates it just a bit, but that toasted nut and caramilzed sugar flavor is incredible!
A staple in my house. I love it!
Yum!
Agree with the oven issue, especially since we have no A/C in Germany!
Looks delicious, though! Although not too sweet (I'm becoming german!)
I think you two should apply to be on this show. I think you would do very well!
Do you have what it takes to throw the most impressive or unique
dinner party? The UK and BBC’s number one food show “Come Dine
With Me” is making it’s way across the pond and we just started
casting it in NYC! The unscripted show follows four “civilian
chefs” competing to win the title of the ultimate dinner party
host! What better place to start filming this show in the US
then America’s food Mecca- New York City? You can’t find
another city with such a strong social love affair with dining
then in NY. What we’re trying to do is find those New Yorkers
and bring them aboard and have them be a part of this show! We
are looking for a diverse mix of competitors to amuse, entertain,
and impress and literally- out-wine and out-dine each other.
They will attend dinners set in each of the contestant’s home and
award each other points for how awesome the dinner party was.
Whoever has the most points after all parties have been attended,
wins! We want to reach every possible demographic to show the
world what New York City's residents have to offer and would love
to chat with you more about the show! If you are interested in
either participating on the show or running a story about the
casting, shoot us an email at ComeDineWithMeUSA@gmail.com. “Come
Dine With Me” (the UK version) premieres on BBC America on July
7th, 2010. For more information about the show, please visit

Oh my sweet heavens YUM oh YUM!!
I can honestly say I've never had key lime (or just lime!) pie ever. Must try. This looks delicious.
I absolutely agree with Anonymous above. My sister told us about this show and it's meant to be great. In the immortal words of Ben Stiller as Starksy "Do it!"
I wonder if Aron might miss the OR while we're off kicking arse on the game show? Because of course we'd kick arse.
Thanks for the vote of confidence! I'll have to check it out.
And Pinecone camp–you definitely have to check out Lime pie! The only thing I don't like it when it's gone (inevitably too soon).
Love the dessert documentation. Mmm…key lime pie is one of my summer favorites.
throw some raspberries on there and i'd eat the whole thing. mmmmmmmm.
HI Aron!
i must admit, im not a big fan of pie, but this does look like it would taste great! im not very good at baking either….hahah
Oh, yum! I'm making this. Thanks for the recipe!
This is almost too much, but one of my wine vendors told me that she bakes pie in the summer in her toaster oven that she sets up on the porch! I tried it this weekend and learned that pie pans do not fit in my toaster. I also learned that my toaster doesn't work when the door isn't shut all the way. But you should try yours!
I like your thinking, Jenny. Now if only we had a porch! I'm afraid our apartment building hallway is usually hotter than our apartment.
