Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Year-round. Rain or shine.
The Union Square Greenmarket--even when its crowds can be overwhelming--is one of the best things about the city.
While, coming from California, even the turn to vast supplies of root vegetables in the dead of winter is still novel and exciting, summer has to be the most exciting time of all.
Right now we're in that sweet spot, where holdovers from spring are still on offer alongside the first of the tomato crops. I don't know if there are many smells quite as wonderful as that of the stem of a small, marigold-yellow, vine-ripened tomato.

Fantastic photos! I'm loving the cherries this year.
This is the second time I see white eggplants, I do wonder how they compare to the purple ones (as far as preparing them) and purple bell peppers?..interesting...
purple bell peppers?? who knew?
Absolutely stunning pictures. The colours are insanely good. I'm hungry!!
Thank you! I can't believe it's already time for peaches and tomatoes, but I'm not complaining.
Good question regarding the eggplants--I'll have to look it up. My initial thought was to white asparagus (no difference, but not exposed to light); but now I'm thinking that they may have all been white at one point. (They'd look a lot more like eggs!)
Your photos are amazing! How I would love to live in a place that had a market like that! I was just talking with my family last night about how nice I think it would be to live in the city. Thanks for sharing!

Great photos , wonderful produce , I could just dive into those cherries, all that bounty in those turquoise containers, too wonderful to eat!
Oh My!!! I absolutely LOVE farmers markets! Nothing like fresh produce from local farmers. The taste is incomparable!

man i love the union sq. green market. one of my most favorite places to go in the city. love the pictures!
Couldn't agree more...although where did you snap that pic of the cherries!? Last week I went and was devastated to find that I seem to have largely missed cherry season. The Cheerful Cherry people have already moved on, but whoever that vendor is seems to have plenty in stock!
Killing me here! Wonderful!
these photos are gorgeous! my mouth is watering.
I love all of the colors in these photos!!! Markets are the BEST!
purple bell peppers!! amazing. :)
Aahhh! These are great. Makes me want to biggest fruit salad.
great pictures! farmers markets are so lovely. that one looks amazing. i've been loving the tomatoes this season.
Check back, Laura--I just swung by again today and a couple of vendors still had cherries. These were last weekend--Mingarelli (sp?). There were a lot more berries today.
Thanks for the nice photo comments!
great photos! I need to take advantage of our farmers markets more often!
I love a good farmer's market but the nearest one to us is a good 30-45 min away :(
I like the name greenmarket. It's not a term we use in California (that I know of anyway) so I was picturing something entirely different. :) That greenbean shot is gorgeous. I get most of my produce from the markets as well. Such a nice way to shop.
Purple bell peppers?! I have never heard of such a thing. How I would love to wander through such a magical market. It's just too hot in Phoenix right now to wander through the outdoor markets.
This is around the corner from me and I LOVE IT! I go every weekend :)

Beautiful shots! What a fresh looking market,
oh my gosh. we have farmer's markets in new hampshire but nothing like this! wowww.
p.s. i LOVE the second photo with all the cherries...and how just one case in the bottom is picked out :)
I love the Union Square green market for so many reasons! First, obviously the fantastic variety of fresh produce and goodies, and second, it brings back a wave of memories every time I walk by it or through it since it was on my route to school :) Thanks for sharing!
the picture of the cherries and blueberries? awesome.
The cherry photo is amazing! Fresh produce is one of the best things about summertime.
