popbar

by Ashley on June 7, 2010

On one of those super-steamy days last week (we enjoyed a bit of a heat wave in the city), Aron and I checked out popbar in the West Village. You choose your gelato or sorbetto on a stick and then choose whether to dip into milk, dark, or white chocolate, before topping it with something like shredded coconut, hazelnuts, or coffee grinds. Aron tried the coffee gelato, but we both loved the pistachio (with milk chocolate and extra pistachios) best. Very pretty. Very delicious. A bit expensive.

We tried to take our grown-up popsicles across the street to a small park but barely made it out of the store before the gelato was running down over our wrists! Sadly, they didn’t have plates or cups that would let one savor the treat; we both downed ours as quickly as possible. It reminded me a little of the dipped bananas and ice cream bars my parents and I would get all time on Balboa Island* in Southern California (although Balboa Bars came with a little paper boat).

*Apparently Balboa’s vendors were the inspiration for the Bluth banana stand on Arrested Development!

I've been hearing about that place. Such amazing flavors! I love the choice of toppings. I hate it though when pops melt too fast.

Yummy. I've been dying to try these. We had a similar experience with the outta control melting today when we tried the softserve from Momofuku Milk Bar for the first time. Sadly I had to toss about half of our ice cream in the trash when it became too unwieldy :( Also I was juggling a toddler + baby in sling + stroller + stuff, so it was bound to end badly! Oh well…

I love that– "grown up popsicles." I need to figure out how to make them immediately. Oh, and I love that the Bluths' banana stand was based on this!

I went to Pop Bar last weekend and completely agree with your review… I had the pistachio too (dipped in milk chocolate w/ hazelnuts) and my boyfriend had strawberry sorbetto dipped in dark chocolate… tasty and photogenic, but so melty (and messy) that I could barely enjoy it for more than a minute.

Grom Gelato a few doors down is probably equally good (actually I could argue better) and easier to savor.

I love that idea! I wish they had something like that here in Seattle!

I am grateful I haven't seen these yet in Phoenix. With our heat and your described melting factor, they wouldn't last 2 minutes – though I might eat it that fast, love gelato.

Those pops are so beautiful all lined up and what a great concept! @Abracat-I was thinking the same thing about the Bluth Banana Stand from AD :) Best show everrrrr.

These look scrumptious.

I've been looking through your India pics, good stuff! I went in 2003 and loved every minute of it.

Ah, the value of just a little stabilizer to control the melting while releasing full flavor. This looks like a must visit spot!

The coffee grounds are intriguing, aren't they? But I agree with Emily: I'd probably go with Grom a few doors down if I had to choose just one stop. That said, it sounds like we need to all go out for ice cream–it sounds like we all have the same thing in mind. So sorry to hear about the dripping Momofuku, Leigh! It would kill me to have to toss it.

The inspiration for the Bluth Banana stand are the two frozen banana/balboa bar spots on Balboa Island (near where I grew up–these reminded me of those bars). I always had chocolate dip with chocolate sprinkles–as much of that waxy hard chocolate as I could get.
