Heat Advisory

by Ashley on June 28, 2010

It’s nearly 9 a.m. and nearly 90 degrees already. I might have to hunt down Mr. Ice Man again.

Last week, we were about to cross the Williamsburg bridge when we spotted a man selling shaved ice (fortification for the humid hike). He was using the same sort of shaving tool–and offered many of the same toppings–that we found in Costa Rica. Inspired by the heat–and in the name of comparison research–Aron bought us a small cup to share.

It cost us a dollar for the freshly shaved coconut-flavored ice; popbar should watch its back.

These are called piraguas. Very popular in Latin and Central America (and the lower east side!). My favorite summer time street treat growing up as a kid :)

I just went and read the Wiki entry on Piraguas; thank you for alerting me to the name! And thank you, Puerto Rico. In Costa Rica, we were surprised to find that a regional specialty is to add powdered milk and sweetened condensed milk to the sweet syrup. What an odd (and super-sweet) combination it was.

That sounds so perfect right now. Especially if I were at the beach like Bridget, instead of inside a lab, looking out the window at the sunshine. Either way, though, a coconut shaved ice would be delicious!

I am not feeling sorry for you… 105 and 100% humidity down here in the subtropics…it feels like I can actually hold the air in my hands.

However, I am jealous of that yummy looking shaved ice. They only sell super-saccharine candy flavors at the stand by my house.

Summer is the only time of year I don't miss living in the U.S. My boyfriend lives in New York, so I get a whiney play-by-play every night on Skype on the out of control heat. I don't envy you that, but I do want some of that shaved ice.

New York's heat is so hard. It's like the ground is an oven. I love shave ice. I don't think I could've shared!
