Firefly season

by Ashley on June 29, 2010

The fireflies are back. Aron and I didn’t grow up with fireflies, so seeing them rise up from the grass at dusk is pretty magical. Sometimes we watch them in Madison Square Park after work, the few weeks that they’re around–definitely a highlight of summer.
Do you remember the “Green Porno” shorts about the mating habits of insects and mammals that Isabella Rossellini created for the Sundance Channel a few years back? Now I can’t help but picture her funny “Firefly” when the flashes start…

Fireflies are so neat! We don't have them on the west coast so I didn't grow up with them either. I remember visiting DC and experiencing them for the first time as a kid–wicked cool! No matter your age they do have a magical element. Enjoy!

It's funny – the things one takes for granted. I didn't know anyone COULD grow up without fireflies. I thought they were a thing that happened for everyone, everywhere. I'm sad that they aren't.

I don't think I've ever seen fireflies, and now I really want to. Such a cute little movie as well.

I love fireflies. I grew up in the country, so they were always around in the summers… and always magical.
I love that picture.

I spent an hour in Washington Square Park last week watching them light up the shadows under the trees. Isn't it magical that even in big cities they are there, glowing away?

Apparently there's a species that synchronizes its flashes, mostly in SE Asia but also in the smoky mountains (in June). It must be crazy to see!

This photo is by a girl named Kate Pulley–you can follow a link to her photo gallery on the post. They're hard to capture, but I did get a pretty good video walking by Gramercy Park the other night…

Hope everyone gets to see some one day.
