Arepas!

by Ashley on June 17, 2010

There was a time, when we were first living in New York, that we would duck into this itsy-bitsy, super colorful restaurant in the East Village–Caracas–at least once a week. We were obsessed and brought nearly every visitor who came to town with us to try it. We recently stopped in, after nearly a year away.
Venezuelan arepas are probably best described as little cornmeal sandwiches. Aron and I both always order a La Del Gato (queso Guyanes, avocado, and plantains), and he adds pernil (a spicy pulled-pork)–it’s delicious. The cheese is so incredible–I once posted a query to Chowhound to see if I could figure out a source for it, and asked around at quite a few nearby cheese stores and Latin markets. Finally I asked at Caracas and they sold me a small box of the mozzarella-like, creamy white cheese on the spot!
For some reason, we just up and stopped going (the crowds are a bit of a deterrant). But it was as tasty (and cute) a spot as ever when we dropped by for lunch.

I looove Caracas, somehow every time I've been, it's just before the big rush and we've been seated right away. Gotta have good timing!

Sounds great. And also sounds like you might become regulars again?

Oh yes, arepas are just the bees knees. In fact, I think I'm now going to make some for breakfast! Thank you!

Hi! I always read your blog and never comment. I'm from Caracas, Venezuela!

I love arepas too… You should tried "Reina Pepiada" (hard to translate but it's like `Big Queen'): avocato, chicken, onion, coriander and mayonnaise.

You'll love it.

We are two of those "visitors" that you took to Caracas. Now each time we visit, we insist on going back. The food is outstanding.

I LOVE this place! I also used to go there all the time when I was somewhat new to New York and for no good reason it sort of fell off of my radar. I was walking by it recently and recalled how delicious it was and vowed to go back but of course never made it up. You've inspired me to get my act together!

Oh Ashley this posting makes me happy. I am from Venezuela so arepas are a very important part of our diet. I married an American man that, dare I say, is crazy about them (not to mention our two kiddos). His favorite is Reina Pepiada (although pernil con tomate is a winner too). I also have a hard time finding the delicious cheeses from home… Nothing compares… I can't wait to go to NY to try Caracas, crowds and all.

Thanks for commenting, Reina! It's always nice to "meet" people on here. It sounds like, per you and Elena, that I need to try the Reina Pepiada next time.

Isn't it funny how your favorite spots fall off your radar from time to time?

Did anyone try making their own? Recommended recipes are welcome!

Joanna–just say when!
