Burl wood has always fascinated me. We bought a clock made from burl wood at the Rosebowl flea market when we were living in Los Angeles, and I was convinced we should redecorate our entire apartment in a lodge theme. But I’ve never seen anything quite like this.
They are called Mata Palo and are formed when a Bromeliad bores into its host tree–these are from Guatemala. I think they’re totally awesome and remind me of an inverted mushroom.

Great question. I was thinking about buying one and placing it under a glass dome on our sideboard.
Oh, that is an excellent idea. Do you happen to have a pic of how that looks (your sideboard)? I never know what to do on mine. I have a mirrored parsons style table as a sideboard and right now it holds the collection of brass candlesticks I inherited from my great-grandmother. I bet that glass dome thingy is cool. I might borrow, and by borrow I mean steal, your idea

Thanks so much! I think there might be a photo in the Fluffy Ruffles post of a terrarium dome–I'm not sure if the sideboard is set up as it is now but there's a photo of it in the Small Space post (you could search for either title). I'm definitely caught up in dome/terrarium thing lately.
Those candlesticks sound beautiful! I love mismatched candlesticks–brass would be lovely!
Ok, I checked the pictures out – very cool! We had a venus flytrap, too, but it was in a plastic bucket that my son made. I didn't have the heart to change it out. It died anyway, although it did last longer than I expected.

Somehow I inherited a lot of brass – bowls, candlesticks, pitchers & goblets, trays, etc… If/when I get a new camera (my old one got stolen), I will take some pictures and put them on my blog.
