Aron and I were spurred to do some purging and cleaning this weekend–in part due to the need to find space to put away our Christmas decorations (bummer) and in part due to the arctic blasts that thwarted our efforts to spend the day outside (also bummer).
We came across a few different stashes of buttons I’ve been holding onto for years. At one point I even started labeling the button envelopes so I could remember what article of clothing they fit; but the majority are mystery buttons, most likely belonging to shirts long gone.
I don’t think I have ever actually repaired (or needed to repair) a button.

It's funny, my mom has two large jars full of old buttons from my grandmother and great grandmother. They're great to sift through and so colorful. Apparently, they used buttons over and over again, so when clothes wore out, they'd snip them off and save them for a new outfit — a hold over from the depression I imagine.
I've got some friends who keep the unusual buttons to make a new jacket or coat a little more striking.CAM
Cynthia said the above.
Uh-oh. Mine aren't so colorful… I'm not sure they'll hold the same interest for my granddaughter. It's lovely that your mom still has those. I bet there are some real treasures!
Come on… I knew it was you, mom. Although, I suppose some of dad's friends might have striking jackets with unusual buttons.
LOL! So I am not alone in my strange little obsession.
At least I have your example to fall back on when friends and family call me crazy.
Ashley I just found this link as an fun idea for the buttons:
